Maldives all-inclusive holidays are popular with UK couples and families for a simple reason: on a private resort island, almost everything you eat and drink comes from the resort. Choosing the right meal plan can make your stay easier to budget for and more relaxing to enjoy.

But all-inclusive means different things at different resorts. This guide explains what is usually included, what often costs extra, how it compares with half board and full board, and the questions to ask before you book.

For an overview of the islands, atolls and things to do, see our Maldives destination guide.

At a glance

  • Why it suits the Maldives: each resort is on its own island, so you eat every meal there.
  • Usually included: meals, snacks, selected drinks and some activities.
  • Often extra: premium drinks, some restaurants, spa, diving, excursions and sometimes transfers.
  • Best for: couples who enjoy a drink, families and anyone who wants a fixed budget.
  • Check carefully: what the drinks list covers and whether taxes and transfers are in your quote.

All-inclusive is popular in the Maldives because each resort sits on its own island, so there are no outside restaurants or bars to walk to. Every meal, snack and drink comes from the resort, and paying as you go can add up quickly.

On many holidays, you might try local restaurants or cafés in town. In the Maldives, leaving your resort usually means a boat trip, and the nearest inhabited island may be some distance away.

Alcohol is not served on local inhabited islands, and you cannot bring your own into the country. It is illegal to import alcohol into the Maldives, so don’t buy duty-free on the way. Check the full list of restricted items in the GOV.UK Maldives entry requirements.

That is why many UK travellers prefer to pay for food and drink up front. It turns your holiday into a fixed cost and means you can relax without checking every bill.

Maldives meal plans compared

Most Maldives resorts offer four or five meal plans, from bed and breakfast to premium all-inclusive. The right one depends on how much you eat and drink, how long you are staying and how much you want to plan ahead.

Maldives meal plans compared
Plan Usually includes Best for
Bed and breakfast Breakfast only Light eaters who like to choose each meal
Half board Breakfast and dinner Couples who skip lunch and drink little
Full board Breakfast, lunch and dinner; drinks usually extra Non-drinkers who want every meal covered
All-inclusive All meals, snacks, selected drinks and some activities Couples and families who want a fixed budget
Premium all-inclusive A wider drinks list, more restaurants and extras such as excursions or spa time Guests who want to try everything the resort offers

The names vary between resorts, and two all-inclusive plans with the same name can be very different. Some resorts also offer a dine-around option, which lets you use your plan in several restaurants instead of just the main one.

If you are torn between two plans, ask for a quote for each. Comparing the difference against what you would spend on lunches and drinks usually makes the choice clear.

A simple way to compare plans

Think about a typical day on holiday: a late breakfast, a light lunch, a few soft drinks by the pool and a drink or two at sunset. Then think about how often you would want a cocktail, a glass of wine with dinner or a snack in the afternoon.

Work out your daily extras

Ask the resort for its bar and restaurant menus, then add up what you would spend each day on lunch, snacks and drinks. If that total is close to the cost of upgrading, all-inclusive is usually worth it.

What Maldives all-inclusive holidays usually cover

Maldives all-inclusive holidays usually cover breakfast, lunch and dinner, snacks or afternoon tea, and a set list of soft drinks, house wines, beers and spirits. Many plans also include some activities, but the details vary from resort to resort.

  • Meals: buffet or set menus in the main restaurant, sometimes with one or two à la carte dinners.
  • Drinks: a selected list, often house wine by the glass, local beer and standard spirits.
  • Minibar: soft drinks and water, sometimes beer, restocked daily at some resorts.
  • Activities: often non-motorised water sports, such as kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling equipment.
  • Extras: some plans include a sunset cruise, a snorkelling trip or a spa discount.

Premium plans usually widen the drinks list, add more restaurants and include an excursion or two. They can be worth it if you plan to use them, but check exactly what is added rather than assuming.

Drinks are often served during set hours, and some resorts exclude drinks in certain bars or at private dinners. Ask for the resort’s current inclusions list, because it can change from season to season.

What usually costs extra

Even on an all-inclusive plan, some things almost always cost extra. Knowing them before you book helps you compare resorts fairly and avoid surprises at check-out.

Often extra on an all-inclusive
Item Why it matters Ask before booking
Premium drinks and wine Standard lists may only cover house wines and selected spirits Which brands and wines are included, and at what times?
Speciality restaurants À la carte or signature restaurants may carry a supplement Which restaurants are included, and how often?
Spa treatments Rarely included, and can be a big extra cost Is there a spa credit or a discount?
Diving and motorised sports Usually charged per dive or activity Which water sports are free?
Excursions Sandbank trips and cruises are often extra Which trips, if any, are included?
Transfers Seaplanes in particular can add a lot to the price Is the transfer included in the quote?
Taxes and service charge Some prices are shown before these are added Is the price fully inclusive of all taxes and charges?

Private dinners on the beach or a sandbank are almost always extra, even on premium plans. So are celebration cakes and special bottles of wine, so budget for them if you plan to mark an occasion.

Check what your quote includes

Maldives resort prices can be shown with or without government taxes, service charge and transfers. Always ask whether your quote is fully inclusive, so you can compare resorts like for like.

Is all-inclusive worth it in the Maldives?

For many travellers, yes. All-inclusive is usually worth it if you enjoy a drink with meals, like to snack during the day, are travelling with children or simply want a fixed cost before you leave home.

It is especially good for honeymooners and couples celebrating a special occasion, who want to relax without thinking about money. Our Maldives honeymoon guide explains how to choose the right resort and villa for a romantic trip.

Families also benefit, because children’s meals and soft drinks soon add up. Many family-friendly resorts include a kids’ club, but check whether it is free or charged.

When half board may be better

All-inclusive may not be worth it if you drink very little, eat a light lunch or plan to spend lots of time on excursions and diving trips. In that case, half board or full board may be better value.

It may also be less useful if you are staying at two resorts or splitting your time between a resort and a city, such as Dubai. Look at the price difference per night and think honestly about how you holiday.

How to choose an all-inclusive resort

The best resorts for Maldives all-inclusive holidays combine a plan you will really use with the right location, house reef and atmosphere. Look beyond the meal plan before you decide.

  1. Check the transfer type. Resorts near Malé are reached by speedboat, while further atolls need a seaplane or domestic flight. Seaplanes only fly in daylight.
  2. Look at the house reef. If you love snorkelling, a good house reef close to the beach means free underwater adventures every day.
  3. Count the restaurants. On a longer stay, several restaurants and a dine-around option stop meals feeling repetitive.
  4. Read the drinks list. Ask for the full list and the times drinks are served.
  5. Check the kids’ club. If you are travelling as a family, ask about ages, hours and costs.
  6. Compare full quotes. Make sure each quote includes the same taxes, charges and transfers.

For your flights, see our page on flights from London to Malé, and allow plenty of time for your transfer on arrival day.

Questions to ask before you book

A few direct questions will tell you far more than a brochure. Ask them for every resort on your shortlist, so you can compare like for like.

  • Which restaurants and bars are included, and do any need a reservation?
  • What hours are drinks served, and is the minibar included?
  • Which water sports, snorkelling trips and excursions are free?
  • Is the kids’ club included, and from what age?
  • Does the quote include all taxes, service charge and transfers?
  • Are there any minimum stays or dates when the plan is not available?

When to go

The best time for Maldives all-inclusive holidays is during the dry season, from December to April, when you can expect the most sunshine and calm seas. The wetter months from May to November often bring better value and quieter resorts.

Christmas, New Year, February half term and Easter are the busiest and most expensive times. If you can travel in May, June, September or October, you may find better availability and more choice of villa.

In quieter months, some resorts run offers such as a free meal-plan upgrade, included transfers or extra nights. These can make all-inclusive much better value, so ask what is available for your dates.

Our verdict

Maldives all-inclusive holidays make a lot of sense, because you eat and drink everything at the resort. They are best for couples who enjoy a drink, families and anyone who wants a fixed budget.

Before you book, check what the plan covers, what costs extra and whether taxes and transfers are included. If you drink little or plan lots of excursions, compare the price with half board first. When you are ready, get a tailored quote from SkyWays Hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is all-inclusive worth it in the Maldives?

For most couples and families, yes, because each resort is on its own island and paying as you go adds up quickly. All-inclusive gives you a fixed budget and lets you relax. If you drink little or skip lunch, half board may be better value.

What is usually included in a Maldives all-inclusive?

Most plans include all meals, snacks and a selected list of soft drinks, house wines, beers and spirits. Many also include non-motorised water sports, while premium plans add more restaurants, a wider drinks list and extras such as excursions. Inclusions vary, so always check the resort’s list.

Are seaplane transfers included?

Not always, because some resorts and holiday quotes include transfers while others price them separately. Seaplane transfers to distant atolls can add a lot to the cost, so check your quote carefully. Speedboat transfers to resorts near Malé are usually cheaper, quicker and not limited to daylight hours.

Are taxes included in Maldives prices?

It depends on how the price is shown. Resort rates may be listed before government taxes, service charge and green tax are added, which can make a resort look cheaper than it is. Always ask whether a quote is fully inclusive, so that you can compare resorts like for like.

Is alcohol included in Maldives all-inclusive?

Usually, yes, but only from a selected list, such as house wine, local beer and standard spirits. Premium brands, wine by the bottle and some cocktails often cost extra. You cannot bring alcohol into the Maldives, and it is not served on local inhabited islands, so the resort is your only option.

Is half board enough in the Maldives?

Half board can be enough if you have a big breakfast, skip lunch and drink very little. You will pay for lunches, snacks and drinks as you go, which can add up. If you like a drink with dinner or a cocktail at sunset, all-inclusive is often better value overall.

Are excursions included?

Standard all-inclusive plans rarely include excursions, although some include one snorkelling trip or sunset cruise, and premium plans are more likely to include a trip or two. Diving, fishing, sandbank picnics and private boat trips are usually extra. Ask the resort which excursions are covered before you compare plans.

When is the best time for an all-inclusive Maldives holiday?

The dry season, from December to April, brings the most sunshine and calmest seas, but also the highest prices. May, June, September and October often offer better value and quieter resorts, with warm seas and sunny spells between showers. Avoid peak school holidays if you want the best choice of villas.
